Stage One - Using the Mastitis Ratio (Getting your BMSCC under Control)
Modified on 2015/03/06 13:30 by Moon — Categorized as: Uncategorized
Mastitis Ratio
is the ratio of a single cow's mastitis measurement compared to the rest of the herds measurements. It is measured over a 5 day period. A ratio of
1
indicates a cow that is unlikely to be infected. The higher the ratio, the higher the possibility of infection.
If you have a high BMSCC or are starting to use MilkHub for the first time, the
Mastitis Ratio
is a good place to start. This allows you to rank the cows from highest to lowest. The higher the ranking, the more likely that the cow needs to be checked for mastitis. Using this you can screen cows likely to be infected.
Screening the top 10% of your
Mastitis Ratio
cows
twice a week
will enable you to do this. If you still have infected cows contributing to the BMSCC, you should increase the number of cows you screen beyond 10%.
This example looks at a milking herd of 951 cows and setting up an alert for the top 10% of the
Mastitis Ratio
cows.

With this setup the MilkHub in-shed system will sound and display when a cow with suspected mastitis steps onto the platform and her electronic tag is read by the platform RFID reader. This allows you time to check her before you cup her. You can draft her out and bring her back onto the platform after milking for treatment.
