More about recording calvings

Introduction

Calvings can be recorded through Enter Data > Calvings. Calves can be recorded as Reared, Sold, Died, or Bobbied. A BirthID must be entered for calves recorded as Reared. The Tag Cupboard will be checked for a matching BirthID/ElectronicID tag. BirthIDs cannot be recorded which are not available in the Tag Cupboard, so make sure you load the file from your tag provider for the new season before calving.

Use your calving worksheet which has the calves born in order of BirthId. Set the BirthId to the first to be entered today.
A list of calves can be typed quickly by typing the number of the dam in the Cow Number box, and using the shortcut keys (R,S,D,B) for the fate of the calf, and M or F to set the sex of the calf. Use the Enter key to add the calving to the pending list. The BirthId will automatically move to the next available number from your Tag Cupboard.

You can press enter anywhere on the page to add the current calving to the pending list

Unavailable Cows

To keep the data accurate there are a number of rules about which cows can be calved. Cows which are for some reason unsuitable for calving are shown in a lighter colour and cannot be selected. If you hover your mouse over them, the reason will be shown. Common reasons a cow cannot be recorded for calving are:
  • She does not have a BirthId - to ensure accurate records, cows must have a BirthId assigned before they can be calved
  • Her last lactation has not yet been recorded as Dried Off.
