Troubleshooting: Drafting Gate Drafting Too Many Cows

Things to check

Check that the magic eyes are clean
Dirty magic eyes are the most common cause of extra drafted cows. There is one located on the outside of each gate at about hip height and one overhead in the center. With a wet finger or non-abrasive cloth give the shiny black side a wipe and make sure there is nothing obstructing it. We recommend doing this on a weekly basis.

Check air compressor levels
The compressor should begin its compression cycle before it drops below 6 bar (87 psi). If the compressor is not creating enough pressure the gate will be sluggish or may not move at all. To test pull the pin on the compressor that opens the bleed valve and check to see what level the pressure drops to before the compressor kicks in again.

Check cow flow through the gate
If the cows are too close together the gate may not see a break between each one and assume they are the same cow. (If you are having cow flow issues consider having a crush rail installed.)
