Stage One - Using the Mastitis Ratio (Getting your BMSCC under Control)

Mastitis Ratio is the ratio of a single cow's mastitis measurement compared to the rest of the herds measurements. It is measured over a 5 day period. A ratio of 1 indicates a cow that is unlikely to be infected. The higher the ratio, the higher the possibility of infection.

If you have a high BMSCC or are starting to use MilkHub for the first time, the Mastitis Ratio is a good place to start. This allows you to rank the cows from highest to lowest. The higher the ranking, the more likely that the cow needs to be checked for mastitis. Using this you can screen cows likely to be infected.

Screening the top 10% of your Mastitis Ratio cows twice a week will enable you to do this. If you still have infected cows contributing to the BMSCC, you should increase the number of cows you screen beyond 10%.

This example looks at a milking herd of 951 cows and setting up an alert for the top 10% of the Mastitis Ratio cows.

1. Go to Herd Management > Quick Mastitis Report
2. Under Which Cows select Recently Milked
3. Click on Add Critera
4. Under Which Column choose Rank
5. Choose less than or equals in the next drop down
6. Type 95 in the Value box. (95 cows is 10% of 951)
7. Click Add
8. Select all the cows using the tick box next to Actions
9. Click on Actions > InShed Action
10. At Reason for alert/draft choose Check Mastitis. Optional: Type a Description in the Description Box
11. At Draft choose Do Not Draft, Select the Audible Alert for Entry and select the Date of the draft
12. Click Confirm

With this setup the MilkHub in-shed system will sound and display when a cow with suspected mastitis steps onto the platform and her electronic tag is read by the platform RFID reader. This allows you time to check her before you cup her. You can draft her out and bring her back onto the platform after milking for treatment.
